The Maxwell Club of Philadelphia will announce later Friday that the Joseph V. Paterno Award will be given annually to a head coach who "preserves the values that Dad has brought to the game," Scott Paterno said Friday.
The club created the Maxwell Award, its selection of the nation's outstanding college football player, in 1937, and added the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the best defensive player, in 1995. The club will present the 2009 Maxwell to Texas quarterback Colt McCoy and the 2009 Bednarik to Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh at a dinner Friday night in Atlantic City.
The criteria for the Paterno Award, which are still being developed, will focus more on the overall impact the coach has had on the sport, his players and the community, going beyond the wins and losses of that particular season.
"It isn't all about the greater glorification of Joe," Scott Paterno said. When the club presented the idea to Joe Paterno, Scott said his reaction was, "Don't make me out to be a saint."
What a great idea for an award that goes to a coach who does good beyond the game and not just in Wins/Losses. This has been Paterno's vision his entire career. Joe Paterno has done so much for central Pa. in his 60 years of being a resident, assistant coach, and head coach. He has made the University what it is now, and he has helped to shape so many lives, beyond football.
