Benching Jorge Posada is the Right Move

Many Yankee fans are knocking Joe Girardi for his decision to sit Posada in game two in order to use Molina as the catcher who has better chemistry with starting pitcher A.J. Burnett.

Although The Yankees lose Posada's offense during the innings Burnett will be pitching, what is most important is that the pitcher is comfortable. A.J. Burnett is not the type you want to mess with, given his inconsistency and ineffectiveness in big games. As columnist Lisa Olson lays out, the statistics show he is a more effective pitcher with Molina behind the plate and that is the most important aspect of this decision.

The Yankees have enough fire power to win a game with Posada on the bench, who can be used later in the game if needed, which gives the Yankees a huge advantage in terms of bench depth.

Should The Yankees lose the game, or the series, no fans or writers can point the finger at this decision. Joe Girardi is going with the numbers here and the numbers show that his pitcher who is taking the mound in game two feels better with Molina behind the plate.

This is a bold move by Girardi and one Yankee fans should appreciate. He is not allowing his veterans and "real Yankees" to run the show. He is doing what he feels is the right decision to put this team in the best position to win.

Now that Girardi adjusted for his pitcher, it's time for A.J. Burnett to deliver.

American League Playoff Preview

Now that the Twins have won their one game playoff against the Tigers, the American League match ups are set.

Anaheim Angels vs. Boston Red Sox

After being owned by the Red Sox since they won the World Series in 2002, The Angels found a way to get out of that slump this year and win the season series 5-3. They should feel confident that this is the year, on their fourth attempt since 2002, that they finally can knock the Red Sox out of the playoffs.

In terms of pitching, the Red Sox will have the advantage over most teams they face, and that includes the Angels. With John Lester, Josh Beckett, Clay Buchholz and the now healthy Dice K, the Sox staff looks to be poised for a post season run.

Facing the Angels, is a lot like facing the Yankees, who the Sox have struggled with in the second half. The Angels have a patient, powerful offense. That is the perfect formula to beat this Red Sox team.

The key question for the Red Sox is how will their bullpen and offense do in this series. Both have been inconsistent as of late. Their middle relief has not been as solid as it was last year and earlier this year, and Papelbon has not been as dominant this year, but has still found ways to get the job done.

The Angels staff is a lot like the Rockies staff. They do not have a true ace, but have several pitchers who they can rely on and all have the potential to be dominant. The addition of Scott Kazmir really allows the Angels to have a deep and experienced starting pitching staff.

John Lackey will start game one and he has shown that pitching against the Red Sox is not his strong point. He is 3-7 lifetime against the Sox with an ERA over 5.00.

Although they won the season series, and all signs point to them being able to finally get over the hump this year, playoff baseball is different than regular season baseball, and The Red Sox will find a way to win in 4. Their pitching staff has too much experience and has the mental edge over The Angels who know they have never beat The Sox in the playoffs.

Red Sox 3-1.

Minnesota Twins vs. New York Yankees
These are two teams that have taken two totally different roads to get to the playoffs. The Yankees have been resting for the last two weeks and pretty much have had the division locked up since August.
The Twins have won 17 of their last 21 and were four games out in mid-September and were three games out with four games to play but found a way to rally their way into the playoffs.
The Twins come in as the hottest team in baseball, while the Yankees come in as the best team in baseball and swept the season series against The Twins.
The Yankees have the best offense and one of the best bullpen's in the majors. The possible addition of Joba Chamberlain to the bullpen could make it even stronger.
The main question for the Yankees is how will their pitching hold up. CC Sabathia has a career playoff ERA of over 7.00, A.J. Burnett can be dominant at times, but has shown that he is inconsistent, and Andy Pettitte is 37 and not 100% healthy.
Starting pitching will be the main concern for the Yankees and will determine how far they go in the 2009 playoffs.
The Twins have shown that they are a team that you cannot count out at any point. The Yankees have the advantage in pretty much every aspect of the game, but The Twins have shown that they can overcome the odds.
The Twins have used up most of their best pitchers against Detroit on Tuesday night, including closer Joe Nathan for 1.2 innings. Coming into this series on less than 24 hours rest, and a depleted pitching staff will result in the Twins luck running out.
Yankees sweep 3-0.
ALCS
Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees
These two have not met in the playoffs since the classic 2004 Yankees collapse in the ALCS. In fact, The Yankees have not won a playoff series since the 2004 playoffs.
The Yankees and Red Sox know each other very well from their 18 regular season meetings which they split. The Red Sox dominated the first half meetings and the Yankees dominated the second half meetings.
These teams are very evenly matched for the most part with a slight edge in starting pitching going to the Red Sox, as far as consistency and big game experience, and a slight edge in offense going to the Yankees.
The determining factor may come down to the bullpen's where the edge as of late goes to the Yankees. As mentioned earlier, the move of Phil Hughes to the bullpen has made The Yankees bullpen one of, if not the best in the majors.
Since 2004, The Red Sox have overcome "The Curse" and have gotten over stigma of not being able to beat The Yankees. The Red Sox have had the edge in these match-ups over the last few years, and have won two World Series Championships since that 2004 ALCS.
This year it is time for The Yankees to turn things back around and win this series.
Yankees 4-3 in a seven game classic.

National League Playoff Preview

After about a month of being off of our radar because of the NFL, our attention, at least during the work week, will shift back to the MLB as the playoffs begin on Wednesday (Tuesday if you live in Minnesota or Michigan).

The St. Louis Cardinals vs. The LA Dodgers

When it comes to playoff baseball, pitching rules and St. Louis has the edge on pretty much everyone in the National League in terms of pitching. Of the three finalist for the NL Cy Young award, two are members of the St. Louis Cardinals staff; Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright. The two have combined for a 36-12 record, and 19-4 in the second half, and are 3-0 against the LA Dodgers. On the year, St. Louis won the series against the Dodgers 5-2.

On offense, we know that Albert Pujlos and Matt Holliday are one of the best three and four hitters in the majors.

The main question for the Cardinals is the closer spot. Ryan Franklin saved 43 games and had a 1.43 ERA, however he struggled in September, with three blown saves and a 7.56 ERA, resulting in the Cardinals slow finish on the year. Closing games in the post season is not like closing in June and July, so St. Louis will need Franklin to be mentally ready.

As for the Dodgers, the story has been a struggling offense in the second half of the season, including a struggling Manny Ramirez. Manny hit .355 in the first half of the season and just .260 in the second half. The Dodgers will not be able to win this series if Manny struggles. However, we know that Manny is Manny in the playoffs, so don't expect him to continue his slump in October.

The Dodgers rotation has some questions as well. With three solid, but inconsistent arms; Randy Wolf, Clayton Kershaw and Chad Billingsley, manager Joe Torre must decide how to position these three to give LA the best chance of winning. Kershaw ended the season strong, but it looks like Wolf will start game one due him being the most consistent of the three.

In the end, St. Louis will be able to start Carpenter and Wainwright two times each, should this series go five. With that being said, St. Louis will win 3 of these four starts and win this series in 5. St. Louis is good enough to win this in four, however, expect the Dodgers offense to break out of their slump and push this to five.

St. Louis wins the series 3-2.

The Colorado Rockies vs. The Philadelphia Phillies

The defending World Series champions come into this series with more questions than the streaking Rockies who come into this series off a hot second half.

The Phillies have questions all over their pitching staff.

Who should start game 1? Cliff Lee who has never pitched in the playoffs before or Cole Hamels who is not the same pitcher we saw win the MVP of the 2008 World Series.

Who will close games? Brad Lidge who has 11 blown saves on the year? Or will they piece together the 8th and 9th inning using Lidge, Happ, Madson and Eyre? Brad Lidge was perfect last year, but this year he has been anything but.

How will the Phillies use Pedro? He has been solid on the year, but shaky as of late. He also has valuable playoff experience that would help the Phillies. They have him slated for game four (as of the morning of 10/6/09 - subject to change), but maybe getting him in a pivotal game three may be a better idea than Joe Blanton.

As for The Rockies, they do not have as many potential sure things like the Phillies, but they also do not have as many potential busts like the Phillies. The Rockies do not have a true ace, but do have five pitchers with ten or more wins. They will be able to go with Aaron Cook, Ubaldo Jimenez and Jason Marquis in their first three games, and probably be able to repeat that rotation should this go five, as these are the best three options they have.

Home field advantage is not as pivotal in Baseball as in other sports, however these are two of the toughest places to play, in terms of crowd factor. Colorado has its loud "Rocktober" crowd, and The Phillies have their white towels waving. Which one will have more of an effect on the opposition is to be determined.

In the end, although The Phillies are the favorites and have more talent all around, I think the Rockies are the more consistent all around. They don't have one pitcher who is better than any one on the Phillies, but as a whole, their staff is more consistent and has proven they can all get it done, when given the opportunity.

The Rockies steal one of the first two in Philly and go on to win in four!

Rockies 3-1.

NLCS - The Colorado Rockies vs. The St. Louis Cardinals

This will be a match-up of two of the most consistent teams in the National League, especially in the second half.

In this series, The Rockies again face a team with more talent all around, however The Cardinals have less question marks than the Phillies.

Although the Rockies won the season series 6-1, they only faced Wainwright and Carpenter in 3 of those games. Wainwright went 1-1 in his two starts, and Carpenter got a no decision after an impressive 7 inning, 5 hit, and 1 earned run outing that was then lost by the bullpen.

In this series, if it goes the distance, The Rockies will face that one-two punch up to four times, and they do not have enough firepower to overcome these two arms.

In addition, four of those six wins during the regular season came in the first half of the season, before The Cardinals added Matt Holliday who has been a huge addition to that line up.

The Rockies run ends in the NLCS as they lose this series in 6.

Cardinals 4-2.

NL Champs - St. Louis Cardinals.

Quality Commercial Of The Day

For about three hours now I have been watching a football game, but all I hear is how amazing Brett Favre is at just about everything he does. We were remind many times about how he has so much fun and is like a little kid out there on the football field.

Hypocritical of me to knock Favre since I used to root for him, but I now root against him, but gotta admit, old man still has it. What a game for him.

Oh and again - and he has SOOO much fun doing it!

Jersey Girl Of The Day

Not quite a "Jersey" today but fitting for the Monday Night Football match up between the Packers and Vikings. This pretty much represents how everyone in the country, minus Minnesota residents, feel about Brett Favre, including myself, and I was once a huge Favre fan.

Go Packers!

Klown Of The Day

Quote of the day (David Carr): "I feel as good as I did the day I showed up in the NFL," Carr said. "Mentally I am a lot better quarterback than I was my first year. I had no clue what I was doing."

I think what he is saying is that it feels good to know that his only job is to make sure Eli is well hydrated.
